COULD Sleaford become a 'theme town'?

That is the suggestion drawn up in a response to the 'Masterplan for Sleaford' by the Sleaford and District Civic Trust.

Suggested themes include crafts; sports or fashion; or even shoes - as the trust has said at one time the town had a local reputation for shoe shops.

The Masterplan by North Kesteven District Council and Lincolnshire County Council in April 2011 was to design and develop a long-term plan for Sleaford and included ideas for housing growth, employment growth, environment and leisure improvements and many more ideas.

The trust who said they supported the overall aims of the plan has put forward other suggestions including electric micro-buses to be used to transport shoppers from new multi-story car parks to the shops in a bid to ease congestion in the town centre.

A modern two-screen cinema has been suggested to be located in a section of the building that the possible new Tesco would stand - as the trust has said the town has an "increasing popularity of film-going" and "other culture-related activities" should be offered as well as the current craft activities at the National Centre for Craft and Design.

In disagreement with the masterplan's proposal to close the Southgate crossing, the trust believed that for some residents the crossing was seen as a "psychological and even an emotional barrier splitting the town in two" which would in their opinion be exacerbated by the replacement of the crossing with an "awkward" pedestrian bridge.

The trust believed that without planning and vision – Sleaford faced the "stark choices of becoming either a congested dormitory town or a failed town".
